Below you will find what is needed to become a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Because the Eighth Judicial District Court CASA Program aka (CASA Las Vegas Program) must ensure the safety of children, the process for volunteering is extensive, very thorough and comprehensive.

The following steps are required to become a CASA volunteer in Clark County:

• Register and attend a virtual orientation. The orientation session provides insight about the role and responsibilities of a CASA volunteer, requirements, application process, training, next steps and Q&A.

Steps to Become a CASA Volunteer

1. Complete the Volunteer Application

Complete and submit the online CASA Volunteer Application using this Application Link.

2. Schedule and Complete an In-Person Interview

Respond to the email you receive from the CASA Program to schedule your in-person interview.

During your interview:

• Child Abuse and Neglect Screenings (CANS) will be completed for each state in which you have resided during the past seven (7) years, as required by the National CASA Association. There is no fee for the Nevada screening; however, other states may charge a fee to process their screening.
• Fingerprints will be taken at no cost to you.

Please bring a valid state-issued identification card or driver’s license to your interview.

3. Driving Documentation — If You Plan to Transport Children

Transporting children is not a requirement to become a CASA volunteer and can be considered after you have been sworn in.

If you choose to transport children as part of your CASA volunteer role, you will need to provide:

• A three-year DMV driving record
• Your automobile insurance declaration page showing minimum liability coverage of $100,000 per individual/$300,000 per accident

4. Complete 30 Hours of CASA Pre-Service Training

CASA volunteers complete 30 total hours of pre-service training over five consecutive weeks.

Training consists of:

• 15 hours of virtual, self-guided coursework
• 15 hours of in-person classroom training

Each week, participants complete approximately 3 hours of virtual coursework independently and attend a 3-hour in-person class with their training group.

In-person training may be held at the Clark County Government Center or the CASA Connections Center.

5. Select a Case

As you near completion of training, CASA Program staff will identify and select an appropriate case. Your case will be selected by the time you are sworn in.

6. Take the CASA Oath of Office

After successfully completing all program requirements and selecting a case, you will take the CASA Oath of Office and be sworn in by a judge.

7. Receive Your CASA Identification Badge

Pick up your official CASA identification badge.

8. Begin Advocating!

Once sworn in, you are ready to begin advocating for the best interests of the child or children assigned to your case as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.
