No special or legal background is required.  Volunteers must undergo extensive background screenings, and are thoroughly screened through an application, interview process and training, to assess the individual’s objectivity, competence and commitment.

Basic Requirements Below: 

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must be willing to make a TWO YEAR commitment to the CASA Program.
  • Must not be an employee of the Eighth Judicial District Court, Clark County Family Services or any agency that might pose a potential conflict of interest.
  • Must be free of a felony conviction or pending charges for felony or misdemeanor involving a sex offense, child abuse or neglect, or related acts that would pose risks to children or to the CASA program’s credibility.
  • Must be free of any domestic violence and/or child-related civil or criminal offenses.
  • Must be free from conviction of DWI or DUI (Driving While Intoxicated or Driving Under the Influence) within the previous five years.
  • Must disclose any Eighth Judicial District Court involvement within the past two years.
  • Must submit a completed application.
  • Must provide a copy of a valid driver’s license, Social Security number and a 3-year DMV printout.
  • Must provide proof of vehicle insurance with personal bodily injury limits of at least $100,000 per individual and $300,000 per accident if volunteer intends to transport children.
  • Must complete a “Statement of Intent to Transport Children” form.
  • Must submit to extensive criminal background checks to include, but not limited to, national, state and local clearances, as required by the Eighth Judicial District Court.
  • Must submit to Child Abuse and Neglect Screening (CANS) for all states of residence in the last SEVEN years, as required by the National CASA Association.
  • Must submit to FBI fingerprinting clearances.
  • Must submit names of three personal or professional references, one must be LOCAL. Do not include relatives as a reference.
  • Must participate in a personal interview before a panel.
  • Must participate in training which is conducted in three or five consecutive weeks/sessions. The total initial training is approximately 30 hours (15 hours in person, 15 online hours completing assignments).
  • Must take the CASA Oath of Office.
  • Must review and accept his/her assigned case.
  • Must perform advocacy duties as directed.
  • Must participate in an annual evaluation and ensure that CASA Las Vegas has a current driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance and DMV printout.
